This superb National Arboretum hybrid is a rough, tough plant. It will take heavy clay, grow in parking strips and dry areas once established. Our mature (25 year) plant is 25-30' tall. The purple flowers over the plant in late March. Very adaptable from Southern California to Michigan.
This upright, almost columnar tree (to 30' x 20'), developed by the US National Arboretum, is perfect for a tight spot where its quantities of 8-10", 12-tepaled flowers of reddish-purple to light-rose will entrance. S-PSh/M
This cultivar is a single-stemmed, tree-form magnolia with ascending branches, the perfect shape for narrow planting sites. Large deciduous leaves , medium green above and light green beneath.
Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' and Magnolia sprengeri 'Diva' were crossed to make this handsome early hybrid. Very dark purple buds open to medium purple 8 in. flowers on this hardy upright tree. Consistently praised by our clients as a dependable money-maker for its precocious blooming habit, ease of care, and fast growth in the nursery.
Lots of large, fragrant 6-9" red-purple flowers spring. Narrow when young, becomes wider. Zones 5-9.
The best of the best, 'Galaxy' is a Kosar hybrid of M. sprengeri 'Diva' and M. liliiflora 'Nigra'. Flowers are fully 9" across and are borne in profusion of red-purple. Deciduous and quickly grows to 20' in 15 years with an 8' spread, achieving a columnar shape. Unique!
