Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Hippeastrum 'Mrs. Garfield' is a famous heritage amaryllis hybrid produced in the UK around the 1880s. This rare collector's amaryllis has wide strap-like leaves centred with a bold white stripe. Its handsome trumpet flowers are soft white and elegantly reticulated with rose veins. Unlike the modern hybrids, this fabulous heirloom maintains evergreen foliage and regularly blooms each year in autumn, especially as the roots become more restricted.
A Hybrid of Hippeastrum Reticulatum. Variegated with a light stripe down the middle of each leaf. One of several old amaryllis we have found preserved in the gardens of India. This variety is over 150 years old. Bulbs are small for amaryllis but nearly full size (1 inch across) They may not bloom until they are well established in their new location. This variety often takes a long time before establishing new roots. Rooting hormone, fungicide, and bottom heat may help. We find they make the best growth in a shady location when it is warm and moist each summer.
