Deuterocohnia brevifolia plant details

What a spectacularly charming plant! The dense mound of rigid succulent leaves forms a sculptural blob that perches so delightfully on edges of walls and artfully covers large rocks. They like to bake in a hot sunny spot with good drainage. In very hot climates, they appreciate the protection of a bit of shade. Like many succulents, they are drought tolerant, but extra summer water will encourage faster growth. Easy to grow where hardy. Tolerates some occasional light frost.

Deuterocohnia brevifolia is an evergreen groundcover bromeliad or cactus / succulent with blue and green foliage. In winter yellow flowers emerge. Grows well with sun - dappled shade and regular - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in winter. Does well in gritty, lean, rocky and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant, verticillium wilt resistant and wind tolerant.

Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Evergreen mounding succulent, the small, 1-2", rosettes forming a low mound up to 3 ft in diameter. Leaves are bluish green with a few spines on the margins; flowers are yellow-green, appearing in early winter. They prefer bright light - full sun or, in the hottest places, light shade -- and well-drained soil. Though drought tolerant, growth is better with summer water. Frost hardy in upper USDA zone 9. Previously known as Abromeitiella brevifolia.
Often listed as Abromeitiellia chlorantha var. minima, this wonderful small-growing, mounding bromeliad is now classed as Deuterocohnia brevifolia var. chlorantha. We find it rather easy to grow with bright light and adequate water during the summer and a winter rest period. The green flowers in early winter are an added bonus.
