This highly ornamental species has leaves that are deep maroon on the undersides, colour that also infuses the stem. This species blooms in early October in Vancouver with a small, tight inflorescence of relatively large, dark orange, unscented flowers. Full sun in rich soil with abundant moisture during the growing season. Mulch with fallen leaves in winter. In colder regions grow in a pot or store in dry peat moss and keep above zero.
Rare and spectacular ginger, to 3-5 ft tall x 3-5 ft wide, with red stems, dark green leaves with red undersides, and stunning, orange-red flowers from early summer to fall. After flowers fade, little plantlets are produced for even more of these lovelies. Light shade in hot areas, full sun on the coast. Regular summer water. Hedychium greenii is a great ginger with great flowers and foliage. The flowers are orange and held in a cluster above the foliage. Hedychium Greenii is a superb foliage plant, with maroon stems and underside of the leaves, with the top of the leaf a dark glossy green. It has a softer appearance than its relatives with large flowers that are a striking orange-red, but have no scent. Hedychium Greenii is quite hardy but requires a well sheltered position in full sun to light shade if to flower. It is reported to naturally grow in marshy areas, so it may be worth trying it in wet areas and possibly as a marginal pond plant. Sometimes call Hardy Ginger Lily, Hedychium Gingers are more cold hardy than most gingers, They put on a great show of flowers in the summer to early fall.
