Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Acer shirasawanum ‘Shira Red’ is a new ‘full moon maple’ for us. It has the beautiful bark of a shirasawanum maple, but with red leaves which makes it unusual for this group of maples. Spring color is pink red turning to burgundy red in the summer. Fall color is crimson red. Shira Red is another new cultivar introduced by Talon Buchholz – Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. Remember the seeds or samaras as they are called for JMs point up, not down like palmatum cultivars. Shira Red grows gracefully to an upright tree of about 6-7′ tall. Overall the growth rate of a Shira Red maple is moderate and the structure of the maple is more like a tree than a shrub. This makes it perfect for a small space. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.
