Nursery contributed plant descriptions

‘Shojo no mai’ is a variegated cultivar similar to Beni schichihenge in variegation – however, the colors of Shojo no mai are much more vivid than that of the Beni. Both Beni and Shojo grow in the classic “V” shape which is an elegant branching structure. As an added bonus this is one variegated cultivar that can handle full sun. A medium sized maple with a moderate growth rate may reach 10′ in 10 years. Once established this cultivar is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5. Fall color is orange to crimson. This maple displays changing leaf color throughout the spring and summer and makes it a focal point for a garden.

Considered one of the best small leaf variegated Japanese Maples, Shojo no mai puts on a wonderful show during the spring and summer. Small green leaves emerge with dark pink edging. In summer, some of the pink color will give way to white. Really a woderful variety for all-season color. The name means "dancing red-faced monkey".
