Pung Kil Japanese Maple has long slender purple-red leaves that hold their color well though out the spring and summer seasons. With its long thin leaves and slow dwarf-growing habits, this Japanese maple is a good choice for a small accent plant, bonsai, or rock garden. Pung Kil Japanese Maple has bright red fall leaf color.
A unique maple with bright red foliage. Each leaf has 3-5 lobes that are long and slender, giving an outstanding and distinctive texture to this bushy tree.
Pung kil is a upright cultivar in the linearilobum group of maples – also known as a strap-leaf maple. The name Pung kil [yes, only one l in kil] is ugly in my opinion, but the maple is gorgeous. It has really dark purple bark and dark purple leaves. As Pung kil ages some of the older bark on the branches can change to a silver color which is also quite attractive. This small tree-like maple prefers sun and may reach 8′ tall in 10 years – maximum height is 10′. Pung kil holds the dark purple leaf color through the summer which is stunning and it can handle wind and hot summer days. The string-like leaves change from deep purple to crimson red in the fall. Once established this maple is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA zone 5.
