Zn 4. Deep purple blooms. Olive green foliage.
Discovered in the garden of former Mt. Cuba Center Director, Richard Lighty, this purple flowered selection is known for its vigor and ease of growth. Plants form 12-15" wide clumps in about 3-4 years. Flowers dance on short wiry stems above the 9-10" tall clumps in mid spring.
Emerging heart-shaped leaves are flushed with burgundy below springtime racemes of rose-pink flowers with white spurs and cups. 15"T Minimum temperature: -20 °F
Epimedium grandiflorum- Leaves emerge green with shades of rose topped by violet purple flowers with long white spurs in spring. Nice, compact mound. Plant in partial sun to nearly full shade. Height 9”-12”. Zones 4-9. Deciduous.
With a name that's quite apropos, this Richard Lighty introduction conjures fanciful flowers distinguished by vivid purple sepals and extended white spurs. Exquisitely detailed blooms dance on dark wire-thin stems above a marvelous bed of damson-flushed springtime foliage. Generating a compact, yet plucky ground cover, the heartlike leaves develop olive green hues and maroon margins as they mature. 'Purple Pixie' will impart enchanting accents to the dappled recesses of your garden, especially when nestled alongside Geranium 'Claudine Dupont'. (pp#13,966)
