This 18” tall plant has deep green palm like leaves with long tips to the leaves. The flowers are hooded and are chocolate purple in spring. Seeds heavily with pretty red seeds in late summer.
Blooms: spring, dark red, long ship like hood/whorled foliage, striped pseudostem Zone 5-9. 3', Japan, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
One of the premier species in the genus with magnificent big leaves comprised of numerous broadly lanceolate leaflets radianting from a central axis and terminating in a fetching long drip tip. Brownish chocolate hooded flowers below the leaves are followed by red corncob fruit. From Taiwan.
Extremely rare in commerce but we have a good supply from seeds collected by intrepid friends. The lizard-mottled stems bursts out of the woodland ground in April followed by dazzling, cobra-lily black flowers and mind-boggling, deeply cut, acid-flashback leaves. Stunning at 30-36" tall. For shade to dappled shade in rich soil with average of summer water. Frost hardy in the ground in upper USDA zone 6, possibly lower.
