Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The flowers of this species have elegant recurved petals that are deep carmine red, spotted with darker crimson spots and edged with white. They are exquisitely scented and can reach 6ft tall. They bloom in late summer and early fall making this species the latest flowering of all lilies. Best in moist, acid soil in part shade to part sun. From Japan and an ancestor of the oriental hybrids.
"All rugged with rubies and garnets, and sparkling with crystal points" (in the words of botanist John Lindley), the wild L. speciosum rubrum caused a sensation when it was introduced from Japan in 1830. By the 1930s millions of bulbs had been dug from the wild for export and, alarmed by the loss, Japanese farmer Hirotaka Uchida started planting seeds from the best that remained to develop this exceptionally beautiful and healthy form. Lightly fragrant, late summer, 4-5 feet, zones 5-7b(9bWC)
