This lovely Japanese selection of an easy to grow species is small, only to about 6-8", with shiny green leaves edged cream and tan. Eventually forms clumps of several rosettes. Best if kept out of hottest afternoon sun in well-drained soil with occasional summer water where dry. A fine rock garden creature where temperatures seldom fall to 15 °F, mid USDA zone 8 and superb in containers where temperatures are too harsh.
This plant is extremely decorative. It remains relatively small and thus makes a great potted specimen. It's not as hardy as the species but is listed as being hardy to about 22 °F. It matures to about 1 foot in diameter with 6 to 8 inch long dark green leaves edged with yellow and having a pale green midstripe. The yellow marginal stripe is highlighted by dark reddish teeth when grown in bright light, giving the leaf four distinct colors.
