Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The hardy Fuyu Persimmon is self pollinating and a very heavy producer of deliciously sweet fruit. Our single mature tree produces hundreds and hundreds of fruit each season on sturdy branches that barely even sag with the weight of the fruit. The Persimmon fruit keep for a long time and can be picked several weeks before ripe to extend the shelf life. The fruit are good to eat before soft and can be eaten like an apple, or cut into slices. After several hard freezes the fruit start to soften and are then ready for making jams or other preserves.

Despite being listed for growing in full sun, our tree is shaded by several other larger trees but still produces just as heavily. Our tree is also grown in hard, compact clay and doesn't seem to mind the irregular and spotty watering of that part of the garden. Very little pruning is required to keep production up, unlike most other fruit trees like cherries, pears, and apples.

Besides being such a profound fruit producer, the Fuyu Persimmon is also one of the most attractive ornamental hardwood trees we have grown. The leaves are large, very deep green, and tougher than they look. They are slightly waxy which makes them look shiny in certain lights. This makes for an excellent garden or shade tree and are now becoming popular for planting alongside sidewalks across the country.

Asian Persimmons are also very disease resistant - very few insects, molds, or critters bother this plant.
We have enjoyed seeing persimmons in gardens the last several years. We finally planted one in our garden as an ornamental last year. The deep green leaves are glossy all summer. In fall, the large orange fruit are glorious. Makes an interesting fruit tree as well as an ornamental.
Attractive glossy foliage of deep green clothe this disease-free tree. Tasty orange fruit, of the non-astringent variety.
These are the pumpkin shaped persimmons that you can eat firm. It is early December and mine are still hanging on the bare tree. I bring them in and let them sit for a day or two and they are delicious. I don't think the tree is hardier than zone 6. It gets about 15 feet tall and has glossy green somewhat leathery leaves. One of my favorites.
