Acer pauciflorum is a slow-growing broadleaf deciduous tree with green foliage. Attracts beneficial insects and birds. Grows well with sun - mostly sun and regular water. Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil.
Almost unknown in the West, these are among the fist of seedlings to be offered in the US. Closely related to Japanese maple, it is reported on web blogs to be perhaps more drought and cold tolerant than A. palmatum. Any features that would allow its use as a rootstock or ornamental on its own merit would be a welcome development to extend the garden range of this popular group of ornamentals, especially in the face of accelerating climate change.
