Silene virginica has bright, thin petalled red star-like flowers held above clean, dark green foliage. This great little plant is native to eastern North America. Short-lived, but reseeds freely. Commonly referred to as catchfly due to it's sticky stems and sepals. A hummingbird magnet! Super flexible in soil moisture requirements from dry to moist as long as conditions are well-drained and in light requirements from sun to part shade. Have fun. This plant can offer you firey red in almost any location in the garden.
Fire Pink, Silene virginica, is a real woodland standout! The bright crimson to pink flowers can bloom for a month or longer. Native to rich woodlands and rocky slopes of the eastern and SE U.S., it requires a well-drained soil in light to medium shade. Short-lived, it will often self-sow in open soil. Hardy to Zones 4 - 8.
