We hope to have enough of this fabulous evergreen tree. We sold out every plant we had last year. We once saw a 40'x 40' specimen in Villa Taranto, Italy. It looked like a huge rhododendron arboretum. This Japanese native is an upright evergreen tree. This is a great tree for the southeast U.S. Our tree is 15'x 6' after 30 years. Gorgeous!
One of the most handsome of the large-leaved evergreens, this striking 10-20' shrub gives an attractive substance to the landscape. Specimens in sun trend to be fuller and smaller while shaded specimens are taller and more open. This lovely shrub can also be pruned into a small tree. The inconspicuous flowers on female shrubs produce strings of blue-black fruits if a male is present. Ours are unsexed seedlings. S-PSh/M
Daphniphyllum macropodum [HC 970612] - A strange rhododendron like plant from Japan and Korea, it has leaves unlike any Daphne I have ever seen. Rhododendrophyllum might have been more descriptive, there is supposed to be a variegated form, which could be fantastic, but alas I've never seen it. Flowers aren't much but worth growing for the foliage and just to say you grow something in the Daphniphyllacaea, which contains 14 other even more obscure species.
