So, apparently this thing was named after one Mr. (or probably Dr.) Whipple. And his anus. At least that is how I read it. Leaving aside the name for a moment, one of the taller penstemon, up to 3 feet or so, with very striking dark purple-red flowers. Reportedly hardy to zone 3, and supposed to be more tolerant of wet soils than most. -Joseph
