Though it looks like cultivated, it grows wild on mountain slopes, where snow is not uncommon, lending it an unusual cold hardiness of USDA zone 5. The flowers are exceptionally large, approximately 4", rather bright coral-red, the three lower petals are have a white zone with is heavily speckled with the same red. Needs a well drained soil.
Lovely salmon-orange flowers on spikes a couple feet tall, like most species glads very graceful with intricately formed flowers. Native to the highest parts of the Drakensberg in South Africa, it may well prove hardy to be hardy. Zone 7, probably 6, maybe 5.
