Zn 5. Silver leaves with a dark green border.
Huge, philodendron like arrow-shaped leaves with variable patterns of silver markings. Quite a dramatic shade loving plant. This native evergreen ginger has upright jug like flowers in great numbers when the clump matures to a diameter of 6-8". Height is also about 6"-8".
Asarum arifolium is a wild ginger from the US southeast with broadly arrow-shaped, anise-scented, deep green leaves with silver marbling. In spring, strange brownish purple, urn shaped flowers emerge clustered amongst the foliage. Easy to grow in a woodland setting or in containers. Possible hardy to zone 4.
Tough Wild Ginger from the Southeast US with good arrowhead shaped evergreen leaves and small urn-shaped flowers that will have you wishing for your bifocals so that you can appreciate the floristic subtleties that you surely must be missing. A shade garden without representation by Asarum species somehow seems deficient and improperly nuanced leaving the gardener with little recourse but to plead a lamentable temporary lapse in judgement. Fortunately this is easily corrected by this roll up the sleeves and let's get to it garden workhorse of a wild ginger. If only all of our unintentional transgressions were this easy to fix and this has no attorney fees.
One of the commonest evergreen native gingers, leaves have a distinctive arrowhead shape and may be either solid green or marked with silvery blotches. Flowers are curious brown jug-like things. ZONE 5
