Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A very unusual plant, residing by itself in its very own monotypic family. Forms a tight clump of vaguely iris-like rhizomes, but the above ground effect is that of an ornamental grass. Narrow grassy leaves about a foot tall, and 2-3 foot spikes of tiny tiny little purply flowers above that in late summer. Apparently widely used in Chinese medicine, googling it will turn up a lot of pretty questionable herbal supplement products made from this plant. Never going to render anyone speechless with its beauty, but well worth growing as you would an ornamental grass. Zone 5
