This low-growing perennial herb is part of the mint family. Delicate looking, but very hardy, Shortspike hedge nettle is great as a ground cover. It grows 1-2 ft tall. Can be cut back pretty hard, as it is a fast grower. Blooms from June to Sept. Prefers moist conditions. It's roots form a dense mat making it a cute choice for north or east slope planting and erosion control. Both butterflies and hummingbirds will use the flowers for nectar. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Provides nectar for butterflies. No Historical Uses found. Found in moist areas such as edges of ponds. Communitites located in Foothill Woodland, Mixed Evergreen Forest, Closed-cone Pine Forest, Yellow Pine Forest, Wetland-riparian .
