Silene occidentalis is a broadleaf deciduous perennial with green foliage. In summer pink flowers emerge. Attracts bees making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun - mostly sun and low water. Drought tolerant once established. Does well in clay and rocky soil.

A perennial herb, sending up an erect stem which reaches 2 feet tall. Western catchfly is endemic to northern California, where it is known from the southern Cascade Range and sections of the Modoc Plateau and Sierra Nevada. It grows in open chaparral and pine forests so it can take extreme drought and poor soil conditions. Flowers occur in a terminal cyme and at the end are five pink petals, each with usually four fringe like lobes at the tip. Endemic to California It is included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 4.3 (limited distribution). 7th Edition / 8th Edition No Historical Uses found. Found in chaparral and mountain forest. Communitites located in Yellow Pine Forest, Red Fir Forest, Lodgepole Forest, Chaparral Between 2297 and 7546 feet.
