An herbaceous perennial that grows 2 - 4 feet tall. Without summer water they will go dormant and reappear with fall rains. Does well in grassy areas or in borders. Combine with blue-eyed-grass, seaside daisy and native bunchgrasses. Large delicate showy pink flowers in the early summer. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Preferred larval plant for the West Coast Lady butterfly. Sidalcea malvaflora leaves were baked and eaten by the Coast Miwok in Sonoma and Marin Counties. The parched seeds were pounded and eaten as pinole (seed flour) Found in open grassy slopes at low elevations. Communitites located in Coastal Prairie, Mixed Evergreen Forest, many plant communities, Valley Grassland, Foothill Woodland, Yellow Pine Forest, Redwood Forest Between 0 and 7545 feet .
