Pickleweed is a halophytic (tolerant of salty conditions).It is a spreading, low growing perennial which grows in various zones of intertidal salt marshes and can be found in alkaline flats. Salicornia species are being tested as a biofuel crop as it is composed of 32% oil and being a halophyte can be irrigated with salt water. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked to give a salty flavor. Native to California and also found elsewhere in North America and beyond. Provides essential habitat for the endangered saltmarsh harvest mouse. This mouse is endemic to the San Francisco Bay Area salt marshes. The plant has been used externally in the treatment of arthritic pain, rheumatism, aches, pains and swellings. Found in salt marsh. Communitites located in Coastal Salt Marsh, Wetland-riparian Between 0 and 328 feet.
