This herbaceous perennial grows to 1-foot tall with a thick woody base and has large, wide basal leaves. In its natural environment, this plant grows in salt marshes and the coastal strand plant communities. Pale violet flowers from July to December. The flowers are more delicate and paler that the exotic species of Limonium, but still showy nevertheless. Native to CA, found only slightly outside its borders. The presence of hemiparasitic Cordylanthus. m. subsp. palustris was strongly associated with the presence of Triglochin concinna and Limonium californicum.
