Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This Pacific Coast hybrid Iris features dark red flowers. The clumps of tough evergreen foliage grows to 18 inches and spreads to 2-3 feet. The gorgeous large flowers are seen in spring. Plant in cool sun to light shade with occasional summer watering. Transplanting or dividing should be done in December. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Attracts beneficial insects. Douglas Iris is the parent stock for many successful hybrids. In some way, it is involved in nearly all the named PCI horticultural varieties. Some are pure, wild plants cultivated because of certain unusual features. But most are man-made hybrids - the result of crosses from specially selected parents.
