Cotton-battting cudweed can be an annual or perennial herb that grows 1-1.5 feet. A cluster of small yellow flowers appear in the summer and will persist into the fall. The feature that will give the garden texture is the wooly leaves and gray color that are delightfully soft. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Provides food for the larval stage of the American painted lady butterfly. Some species of Gnaphalium are regarded by the Chinese as anti-malarial and are used to drive away moths and other insects. Found in moist waste places. Communitites located in Yellow Pine Forest, Foothill Woodland, Chaparral, Valley Grassland, wetland-riparian Between 0 and 6000 feet.
