This delightful mounding groundcover makes a fine fire-retardant, deer-resistant, drought-tolerant carpet; or an interesting bonsai subject. Sun/Dry
Small, dark green leaves and a moderate growth rate characterize this cultivar. Older plantings mound to as much as 5' and require a regular shearing.
Twin Peaks II' is one of the fastest, toughest, densest evergreen native large scale ground covers. Grows easily to 8' wide and 2 - 3' tall. Drought tolerant but monthly water helps it look better - shear hard annually in spring to keep rejuvenated. Sun on coast, afternoon shade inland. Deer don't seem to eat it. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Baccharis species are the nectar sources for most of the predatory wasps, native (small) butterflies and native flies. Useful for erosion control. Horticultural selection B. pilularis: origin from cuttings (1956) Twin Peaks, north coast, San Francisco Co.; introduced into Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in 1959.
