Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Clusters of small, papery orbs with yellow centers bloom July to August above silvery-gray, soft narrow leaves. It clumps but also spreads by stolons to naturalize where conditions are advantageous. In most wildflower gardens something is needed for contrast and substance. This would be it! But do make certain its bed is well-draining. Before the small blooms open to reveal their yellow centers they resemble luminous pearls. If cut for a vase at this time they will last without water almost interminably, hence "Pearly Everlasting". Butterflies add to its appeal! When I think of them, it's always with the memory of butterflies fluttering about the pearls. Native to N. America, Asia, and Europe; 2'T x 1.5'W Minimum temperature: -40°F
This erect, short-lived, rhizomatous perennial grows to 3' tall. Use in a perennial border, rock garden, or meadow landscape. Drought tolerant, but occasional summer water is best. Flowers make 2" clusters of white button heads. Pearly white flowers dry nicely in a fashion similar to straw flowers. Silver gray color gives a contrast to other plants with darker foliage and flowers of brighter hues. Blooms mid-July through September. Native to California and is also found elsewhere in North America and beyond. Due to it's rhizome forming habit, this perennial is great at stabilizing slopes while also providing nectar for traveling butterflies. The young leaves are edible when cooked and the plant has been used medicinally as an antiseptic and astringent. It is also a natural source of yellow dye. Found in moist meadows, by rivers, and in sandy and waste places. Communitites located in Yellow Pine Forest, Red Fir Forest, Lodgepole Forest, Subalpine Forest, Foothill Woodland, Chaparral, Valley Grassland Between 0 and 8500 feet .
