This Acer grows quickly and will establish a dense shady canopy in a few years. Common associated plants are Snowberry, California Rose, Coffeeberry, Willows, Cottonwood, and California Blackberry. Flowers March through May. Endemic to California. Many species of birds and squirrels feed on the seeds of box-elder and it is an excellent stream side stabilizer. Some use it as a source for charcoal since it grows rapidly and responds to breaks and other damage with new stump sprouts. Found in streambanks, canyons. Communitites located in Mixed Evergreen Forest, Redwood Forest, Yellow Pine Forest, Wetland-riparian Between 0 and 6000 ft.
