Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Kaempferia rotunda is known as peacock ginger or Indian crocus and hails from China and India. The flowers emerge before the leaves. They are orchid-like with four petals, the upper two white and the lower two flushes with purple and lavender. The elliptic foliage emerges after flowering with beautiful markings of silver and darker green with burgundy undersides. It is said to be hardy to zone 7. Mulch with fallen leaves in winter. Or to be safe and in colder zones, grow it as a container specimen and protect in winter. It will most likely also go dormant indoors for 2-3 months. Let it dry out and water only sparingly to keep soil off-dry until spring.
