Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Our honeybees have been asking us to grow this native species of Beebalm (we grew it in our gardens years ago, before bees). Now have it again! Whorls of yellow-ochre colored spotted blossoms which are offset with showy pink flushed bracts create a pretty display in early summer. We also just learned that this Beebalm resists many kinds of mites which could impact the bees because it is incredibly high in thymol, a known miticide, anti-bacterial agent and fungicide. Grows 18-30” tall and spreads by self sown seed where it is happy. Grow in sun and well drained soil.
The bright lavender 'flowers' of the Dotted Mint are actually leafy bracts that surround the true flower. A multitude of butterflies visit Monarda punctata - a top nectar plant for the rare Karner Blue Butterfly. Dotted Mint is biennial and self-sows readily on open sandy soil. Hardy to Zones 3 - 10.
