Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Silver Maples have become quite popular for their use as a fast growing shade tree. They have a naturally spreading branching habit that pack in thousands of clusters of leaves and produce a dark, cool shade. Silver Maples are often used in public parks to created shaded lawn areas with branches starting more than 30 feet above the ground. Trees can grow more than five feet per year and have wide travelling roots to provide good stability. Best placed away from buildings to prepare for their eventual large size.
Silver Maples like water and thrive in lawn watering conditions, but are also quite drought tolerant. The name 'Silver' comes from not only the silver shine on the bottom of the leaves that shine like stars from above, but also the deeply fissured bark which is quite silver - especially when young.
