Dichorisandra hexandra

Dichorisandra siebertii is a plant in the commelinaceae family. Most people know this group from some of the more common plants like the wondering jew. This plant has often been called the blue ginger since it resembles a costus ginger when mature. The juvenile leaves are often streaked with silver lines down the foliage and some purple to maroon coloration around the base of the leaves. The stems are streaked with brown markings and the plants can grow to 6 feet tall in idea situations. Once mature a large bracket of blue flowers are held above the foliage. This has been a great plant in pots and out door beds for summer or used year round in tropical gardens. I have also found that if trimmed the small plants can be used in terrariums and will stay small if maintained.
