Anthurium (Joe's Stripes) With any good plant their is usually a good story that goes with them. This plant was found and grown out by seed by a wonderful plant guru Joe Wright. I met Joe when I was 19 years old and Joe had to have been in his mid 80s. Odd for two people with such a difference in age to share the same hobby. I soon made it a priority to visit Joe on my yearly treks to Florida. I would often trade or give Joe new plants to grow, and he was quick to share any of his plants he could. He was a great grower and dabbled in breeding new varieties. This Anthurium was one he grew from seed. I am not sure if it is just a clone of a species or possibly one of Joe's own hybrids. He was thrilled to tell me how the petioles were banded with dark marks on each flower spike something rarely seen in Anthurium species. He had planned to give me a piece of the plant once he had propagated it. Unfortunately for everyone Joe passed away. I lost a great friend and plant mentor. I thought for sure the plant was gone forever. While on a visit to Florida I decided to stop in to see Joe's wife Boots who was planning to sell everything she could to move north with family. It was odd visiting without Joe and I bought what I could to help out, I was very surprised to run into this Anthurium still tagged and growing wonderfully in Joe's make shift greenhouse. I am not sure how stable the striped petioles are. I have yet to see it for myself. The first two photos are of Joe's first photos of the striped petioles. I have been propagating off of the same plant and decided it would only be right to put a name with the plant that honored Joe. He was a military man back in the day so. I figured Anthurium (Joe's Stripes) would do. It should make for a interesting house plant or addition to any collection. I personally hope to see it bloom some day soon. Foliage: Birdsnest habit narrow leaves. Flowers: black flower held on a striped petiole of green with dark bands. Height: Terrestrial or epiphyte
