15 YEARS IN THE MAKING! Yes, it’s taken us that long to be able to offer this ultra-rare Mediterranean Peony. We started with one fascinating plant grown from seed 15 years ago, & with much care & patience we are now able to offer these 3-4 year old bloom-ready, seed-grown plants. We’ve made this effort not only because this endangered Peony is absolutely beautiful, long- lived & exquisitely scented – but also because it-s not hard to grow at all since it requires no Winter chill like so many other commonly available Peonies…Temperate climate gardeners rejoice! Growing to a graceful 18” x 18”, ‘Majorcan Peony' unfurls its magenta buds in February & March, displaying stunning 4” soft pink-flushed deep rose petals encircling prominent golden-yellow anthers. Take a sniff & you’ll be rewarded with a surprisingly delicious cinnamon-allspice scent. Highly ornamental magenta seedpods follow the faded blooms by Summer. Very handsome foliage too - metallic blue-green leaves present bright beet red undersides & new growth in Spring is a stunning wine red. Native to dry stony places in Corsica, Sardinia & the Balearic Islands, this treasure requires good drainage & we’ve found it thrives easily in a 3-5 gallon container with an annual Spring 1’ top dress of compost. Not completely clear on hardiness, though there are reports of it growing happily in Zone 7. Personally, I would protect the dormant plants during Winter in zones colder than Zone 9 till I hear otherwise. (Do tell!) Deciduous.
One of the smallest species with strongly purple-bronze colored leaves in spring. They will loose the intensity later in the season but still maintain some of the coloring. The relatively large flowers are lavender-pink. Needs excellent drainage.
