Nursery contributed plant descriptions

I've always loved hollyhocks, and yet I rarely see them for sale or in gardens these days. A. rosea is the standard, cottage garden species, with tall (to six feet or more if happy) spikes of lush flowers. Biennial or short lived perennial, but will self-seed to perpetuity if you let it. This is a particularly nice form with exceptionally bright red flowers. Alcea seems to be very site-specific for me... I've grown them, or tried to grow them in just about every place I've gardened around Ohio and Michigan, and in some gardens they've been absolutely gorgeous and practically a weed, and in others they get covered with rust and gobbled up by every insect in the neighborhood. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Zone 3
A radiant selection of this cottage garden staple, with satiny red saucers opening in succession from the bottom of the spike upwards, blooming summer to early fall.
