Mount San Bruno coffeeberry is an evergreen shrub that grows 4-6' tall and 6' wide. A vigorous dwarf form of Coffeeberry from San Bruno Mountain. Its mounding form and year round good looks make it useful in many situations. Its extremely adaptable in full sun or shade, with occasional or regular water. In early summer it festoons itself with berries that change from green to red to black. It is a great choice for the wildlife gardener. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Great for wildlife Horticultural selection of Rhamnus californica; the origin was cuttings in 1983 from San Bruno Mountain; introduced by Roger Raiche, 1991
Dense form of coffeeberry selected by Roger Raiche from San Bruno Mountain just south of San Francisco. Tightly branched with dark green leaves that are narrower than is typical for the species. Spring flowers are cream-colored and develop into maroon fruits that are attractive to a wide range of birds. Mature plants will reach a height of 5' with an equal spread but can be pruned to maintain a smaller size. One of the most garden tolerant native shrubs available in our experience and can be used in both sun and shade. Drought tolerant once established but fully compatible with regular garden water. Hardy to 10 °F.
