Cistus ladanifer is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with green foliage. In spring and summer white flowers emerge. Attracts bees and butterflies making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun and occasional - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in summer. Adapts to various soil conditions. Does well in acidic, alkaline, average, clay, gritty, lean, rocky and well-drained soil. A western Mediterranean plant, fragrant, ornamental, and medicinal, this evergreen rock rose has showy, white, crepe-paper blooms, with a small crimson spot near the base of each petal. Resinous leaves are a brilliant waxy green. Blooms have a light honey scent and even the leaves are aromatic.
When we think of rockrose, this is the one that comes to mind: a 4' x 4', evergreen shrub with sticky, scented, dark green leaves and huge white flowers marked in the center with crimson splotches. Easily trimmed to size after spring blooming period. Full sun, lean soil that drains well, and little summer water once established. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
A mid-sized shrub to 6' with an equal spread and a compact habit. Leaves are 4" long, dark green above, lighter beneath, sticky and fragrant. Flowers are white, to 3" wide, with a dark maroon basal spot on each petal, and appear late spring and early summer. Adapted to periods of drought. Southwestern Europe to North Africa.
