Chamise tends to be a medium to large shrub, 5-8' tall by 8-12' wide. Its name originates from its fascicled (clustered) leaves. A very tough plant used as a screen, informal hedge, or wind break and it's a super, excellent erosion control species. In the wild Chamise also protects the soil after fires as its crown sprouts back from the base. Chamise is very flammable, so don't plant it near the house! Bloom time February - July Native to the coast ranges (Mendocino and Lake County south to Baja) and Sierra Nevada mountains. Chamise is suitable for revegetation because of its well-developed root system and drought resistance . In the wild Chamise also protects the soil after fires as its crown sprouts back from the base. Chamise was used by Native Americans for a variety of medicinal purposes. Chamise oils were used to treat skin infections. Found in dry slopes & ridges; chaparral & mesas. Communitites located in Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Found between 0 and 5249 feet .
This dominant member of our California foothill scrub community grows 5-10' high and as wide. Valued for its twisted form and rugged appearance, it is best used as a ground cover on well-drained slopes. Use caution planting too near dwellings, as the resinous foliage is highly flammable.
