Variegation in pastel tones and leaves that may curl or twist distinguish this attractive Japanese maple. In spring, the light green leaves display white-pink spots, sometimes covering large areas. In summer, the variegation softens, and in fall, the foli
One of the loveliest of the variegated maples with soft and varying combinations of pastel pinks and whites (like clouds!); slow-growing to a dense 6-10' shrub with small (2") 5-lobed, somewhat-twisted leaves. PSh-Sh/M
Floating Cloud, or 'Ukigumo' Japanese Maple is one of the most brightly variegated varieties available with intense spring variegation. During the course of the summer, the foliage becomes less variegated which provides the plant with enough photosynthetic leaf area to still grow at a reasonable rate. Other variegated forms which hold the variegation longer can be frustratingly slow to mature.
Be sure to protect plants from hot afternoon sun.

Please note that young trees often show little to no variegation for the first few years. The variegation changes a lot from year to year and trees that are stressed (such as when newly planted) will typically not show variegation in that year. As the tree matures over 1-2 years it will begin to show much more noticeable pink and white color, with full variegation often starting in the third year. Even shade cover after mid-morning and well draining soil yield the most highly variegated trees.

As a young vigorous plant, the leaves will be green. As the plant matures there will be white spots and eventually the leaves will look like they are totally white. A wonderful 10' tree for highlighting the shady garden.
A small to medium sized tree, Ukigumo in Japanese means ‘Floating Cloud Tree’. The new growth is variegated with white and green leaves mixed with pink. The growth habit is spreading with layers that Japanese translate to clouds. One of the finest maples in the variegated group and one of the favorites at the nursery. In the fall the entire maple turns pink before changing to the final leaf color – crimson red . Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Estimated height in 10 years is 10′ and a width nearly 6′. Ukigumo like other Japanese maples benefits from some pruning to shape the tree, as well as removing any dead branches. A must for a Japanese Maple collector with a shady place. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6.

Ukigumo Japanese Maple is also known as the floating clouds. This is one of the most striking and beautiful of all variegated Japanese maples. The foliage emerges in spring a brilliant white, blushed pink and green. Later in the season it turns into a pastel green and white cloud with a touch of delicate pink on the tips. What a sight against a dark background! A spectacular conversation piece, this slow growing maple is great for small gardens. Ukigumo Japanese Maple does best with afternoon shade.
One of the most exceptional variegated cultivars. Name translation: Floating Clouds
Matures into a shrubby, small tree. Foliage is green with 'floating clouds' of pink and white, also leaf edges tend to be variegated with pink. Variegation will vary from year to year and plant to plant, but will be better if planted in shade. Growth Rate 6-12" annually, medium
This is a stunning variegated maple, which has most unusual color on the leaves. The basic color is green but most leaves will have strange blotches of white or pink over the leaves. Still some leaves will be completely green, especially when the tree is young. The name means "floating clouds". This tree needs to be sited in a partially sunny location for best leaf color.

One of the most striking variegated Japanese Maples. From afar the small, green, white and pink variegated leaves have an ethereal effect. This conversation piece is perfect to brighten a shady spot in the garden. Eventually reaching 12 ft. in height. Great Plant Picks.
Variegated leaves are green with white & pink. Whiter in shade. USDA zones 6-8
The translation of the name of this maple is Floating Cloud which is appropriate if you think of early morning fluffy pink clouds; the foliage on this tree is otherwise indescribable, but it grows slowly to 8'. Zone 6
PALMATUM, variegated. The name means "floating clouds," and it is a fitting description of this fine maple. It has green base leaf color, with "floating clouds" of white and pink mixed into the green. Often the edges of the leaf are pink, giving the plant a soft and beautiful appearance. It is important to note that the amount of variegation will vary greatly from year to year, plant to plant, site to site. Place where it receives enough shade to prevent burning of the leaves; however, allow the tree as much sun as possible to develop best color. This is not a rapidly growing plant, but it eventually becomes a multi branched, shrubby small tree.

A 10 foot tall tree with light green leaves heavily speckled with pink and white. Position in partial shade to avoid leaf scorch. Not a fast grower.
