Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Kawaii was developed and propagated by Talon Buchholz in Gaston, Oregon. This cultivar is in the ‘full moon’ group of maples – Acer shirasawanum. Kawaii is a slow growing lace leaf cultivar that can reach 4′ in 10 years. However, this lace leaf does not weep. The branches are not pendulous, but rigid. New growth is pink/red turning to a darker red color with green variegation in the summer months. Words cannot describe the unusual beauty of this rare cultivar, but in Japanese the name means ‘cute’ and that is absolutely true. The growth habit is compact for a lace leaf that is not a weeper and it is often grafted on a high standard to give it some height which creates a whole new appearance. However, a low graft is perfect for the bonsai enthusiast, as well a more traditional look for this cultivar. A wonderful addition to a small garden or for a container on a deck or patio. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5. Fall color is orange to crimson. Truly a collector’s must.

Lacey leaves, finely and deeply dissected, emerge pink in spring, then become orange-red with bright green petioles in summer, and finally, bright red and orange in fall. This 2' mounding, deciduous, dwarf tree is very slow growing, so would work well in a pot or perhaps on a small mound. Kawii means "cute", translated from Japanese...aptly named.
'Kawaii' is a dwarf mounding maple with leaves that emerge orange and red in spring. Summer color is green before changing to deep red and deep orange for fall. Talon Buchholz's wife, Haruko, eyed this plant and uttered "Kawaii", which means cute. This plant certainly lives up to its name, only growing to a 2 foot mound.
ACER shirasawanum KAWAII ASKAWAII_5 Zones: 5-9. Formerly Acer japonicum. ‘Kawaii’, translate that as ‘Cute’, is a short weeping japonica maple with small leaves 2 - 2.5" long emerging in spring colors of plum red with orange shading. Summer brings more green to present an orange edged green leaf followed by brilliant fall colors of red and orange thus giving a long season of visual delight. Hardier to-20 degrees than most palmatum maples Kawaii grows slowly to about 3-4" at ten years, slightly taller with age. Easily kept shorter with trimming. Prefers filtered shade or AM sun, with moderate water and good drainage. Shipping size approximately 10-15", young graft, just starting to fill in.
A golden full moon maple with lovely peach colored foliage. This is a pretty small tree spring-fall. Fall color is bright golden yellow.
One of the most exciting new varieties. Kawaii leaves emerge in spring with beautiful plum-red with orange overtones. As summer progresses the veins turn green creating an orange edged leaf. Kawaii has been proven to be much hardier than most lace leaf palmatum. Leaves are very small, often under 3 inches across. Fall color offers brilliant red and deep orange. The name in Japanese means "cute".
The foliage of this low, slow-growing Full Moon maple looks fantastic throughout the season. Bright pink-red spring leaves become orange-red with green highlights in early summer and bright red and orange in fall. Chartreuse leaf bases and light petioles add to the appeal. In Japanese, the name 'Kawaii' means "cute," not to be confused with the Hawaiin island Kauai. Dissectum.
