Thin, lightly-colored leaves on this fascinating maple are distinctively beautiful. The leaf surface appears to be stretched across the ribs of the leaf-a bat-wing maple. Like us, you've probably wanted one of these since you saw the awesome photos in Ve
Totally unique, shallowly divided, 7-9 pointed lobes resemble a bat's wing. The light green leaves with numerous small dots of white are accentuated by the contrasting dark green mid-rib of each lobe. The mid-ribs are also enhanced with a near white line on either side. When leaves first appear in spring they are an unusual pale pink-yellow. One of the oldest known specimens is in the Villa Taranto estate in Italy. Estimated to be 95-100 years old it measures 12 feet high and wide.
The Usugumo Maple has unusual bat wing leaves. Sounds weird, but true. Foliage has ribbed veins and the variegated foliage is stretched in between. These plants have pink-white blotches in summer. This unusual 10-14’ shrubby tree is rarely seen in American gardens.
