Native to China at altitudes of about 12,000 feet, this rare upright fir has incredible copper-red peeling bark even on trees that are only about 6 years old. Dense, dark green needles have silvery undersides, and outrageous purple cones put on a show in
A cultivar of a Chinese native used for timber, 'Flaky' is so named for its rich red-brown, papery, exfoliating bark, but its tight, upright purple cones (beginning red-violet) are equally noteworthy. Rising to 10 feet in 10 years with about a 4 foot in width, eventually it will be a very tall tree to approximately 70 feet. Needles are short and stout, blue-green with silver undersides. Narrowly conical, it has a somewhat loose branch arrangement.
The flakey form of Flaky Fir, it sounds a bit flaky to me I suspect a tag corruption somewhere along the way. On the other hand it makes a great gift, and insinuated into certain gardens provides a subtle warning.
