Nursery contributed plant descriptions

We call this ‘Beastie Begonia’…luscious, large, waxy leaves in slowly expanding clumps 18-20” tall and 2-3’ wide. Mature leaves develop big tubercles on top that eventually cause the leaf to bend down to the earth and start new plants! Like most Begonias, this beastie enjoys shade, soil that is rich, moist and well drained and adoration. Pink flowers late summer to fall. Mulch to protect shallow rhizomes in winter. Collected from Emei Shan Province in China by Dan Hinkley.
A Dan Hinkley collection from Emei Shan and a striking addition to the increasingly large repertoire of begonias hardy in USDA zone 6 or above, this with 6-8?? succulent, heart-shaped leaves and, in late summer and fall, attractive clusters of luscious pink flowers within the canopy. Shade to afternoon shade in moist conditions. Evergreen into the upper 20s F; deciduous but resprouting handily in early spring after temperatures as low as -10F, USDA zone 6, especially if mulched. A swollen (node) at the end of each leaf petiole can sprout and increase the plant. Easy.
A Dan Hinkley collection from Mt Emei and touted as being hardy to Z7 but only by those in serious zonal denial. We would suggest mulching well as soon as the mid 20's are reached. An attractive plant with late season pink flowers and well worth trying in a sheltered spot.
