An early hybrid begonia dating back to the 1940's remains a popular plant prized for its vigor and ease of growth. Large rounded glossy green leaves backed in deep red and centered with a dramatic light star at the center. Pink spring flowers are held above foliage on 10inch stalks followed by winged seed pods. To about 10"" tall and trailing to 18 inches wide on lax stems. Great in low containers or hanging baskets. Easy in bright indirect light and rich well drained soil. Similar to caning types, these like to dry out some between watering. USDA zone 10, Protect from frost.
Beefsteak Begonia - A rhizomatous old, heirloom variety. Large 4" rounded thick fleshy leaves, dark shiny bronze-red with reddish undersides. Grows into a very large plant displaying pink flowers on long slender stalks year round. Likes bright shade and kept on the dry side, min temp. 55 °F. A remarkable plant of yesterday.
