Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers' has a profusion of exceptionally large white flower clusters that emerge in summer against dark green, deeply lobed oak like leaves. Blossoms quickly age through pink to deep pink-red, remaining upright even after heavy rains. Foliage turns a brilliant mahogany in fall. Compact form is well suited for small landscapes. Ideal used in mass plantings, hedges and mixed borders.

Spectacular upright 9" inflorescences start out white before turning pink and then to a deep-dark rose make these compact 3-6'shrubs not only more usable for small gardens, but beautiful as well; a wonderful plant produced by 10 years of work by US National Arboretum. S-PS/M

Ruby Slippers Oakleaf Hydrangea is a small plant with huge impact! It has large cone shaped flower heads that start off white but end up a burnished ruby red in fall. The oak leaf shaped leaves of Ruby Slippers Oakleaf Hydrangea provide excellent fall color.

Small in stature (to 4') but big in impact! This recent selection of Oakleaf Hydrangea boasts a bevy of large white flowers in early-mid summer which quickly age to a rich rosy red. You can always count on Oakleaf Hydrangea to add a handsome boldness to the mixed border. Shipping trade gallons.

A 2010 US National Arboretum introduction that is a cross of 'Snow Queen' and 'Pee Wee'. The upright, 9" inflorescences come out white but very quickly oxidize to a pleasant rose hue. The total plant height is about 3.5' and fits nicely into dense housing areas of today.

Compact oakleaf hydrangea w/ white flowers, foliage turns crimson red in autumn

By: Nasketucket Gardens

Easily slipped into a diminutive spot, this compelling smaller-statured beauty sprung from a 1998 U.S. National Arboretum cross between 'Snow Queen' and 'Pee Wee'. Exceptional 9 in. upright flowers, which open white but quickly transmute pale pink and eventually deeper rose hues, dress up a more petite, compact rounded carriage. Broad, lobed deciduous leaves are dark green in summer and mahogany tinted come autumn. A peerless companion for fine textured plants such as Spiraea 'Ogon' or Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis, 'Ruby Slippers's lovely low profile can be ushered to the foreground, planted en masse or utilized as a hedge.

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. Another great compact Oakleaf with wonderful Wizard of Oz references, hybridized just for smaller landscapes and containers. I have yet to need to prune my 5 year specimen that has grown to just 4 feet. Thanks to the US National Arboretum breeding program in McMinnville, TN (the good witch of the north) for your diligent efforts and the opportunity to offer this gem. This offering is the result of hybridization of Snow Queen and PeeWee. The great upright quality of Snow Queen blooms matched with the compact nature of PeeWee makes it a jewel of a plant.
