A 2010 US National Arboretum introduction that is a cross of 'Snow Queen' and 'Pee Wee'. The upright, 9" inflorescences come out white but very quickly oxidize to a pleasant rose hue. The total plant height is about 3.5' and fits nicely into dense housing areas of today.

Easily slipped into a diminutive spot, this compelling smaller-statured beauty sprung from a 1998 U.S. National Arboretum cross between 'Snow Queen' and 'Pee Wee'. Exceptional 9 in. upright flowers, which open white but quickly transmute pale pink and eventually deeper rose hues, dress up a more petite, compact rounded carriage. Broad, lobed deciduous leaves are dark green in summer and mahogany tinted come autumn. A peerless companion for fine textured plants such as Spiraea 'Ogon' or Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis, 'Ruby Slippers's lovely low profile can be ushered to the foreground, planted en masse or utilized as a hedge.

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. Another great compact Oakleaf with wonderful Wizard of Oz references, hybridized just for smaller landscapes and containers. I have yet to need to prune my 5 year specimen that has grown to just 4 feet. Thanks to the US National Arboretum breeding program in McMinnville, TN (the good witch of the north) for your diligent efforts and the opportunity to offer this gem. This offering is the result of hybridization of Snow Queen and PeeWee. The great upright quality of Snow Queen blooms matched with the compact nature of PeeWee makes it a jewel of a plant.
