Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Horben is a recent introduction to our Hydrangea collection and it has quickly become one of our favorites; it produces extra deep green foliage and the flower color is much darker purple than any other Hydrangea we grow. The plants are also nicely compact and will tolerate more sun than most other varieties. Horben also starts flowering heavily at a much younger age than most other Hydrangeas, even our one season old cuttings start producing full-sized blooms that are larger than the whole plant!
Like other Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, Horben's flower color will change depending on the pH of the soil. In neutral or basic soil, the flowers will be either purple or dark pink. If you want a pinker color then add some ground lime (available at most garden centers, nurseries, and big box stores). To encourage a deeper purple or bluer color you can add either coffee grounds or Aluminum Sulfate to bring the soil pH down.
Tightly packed petals on this gorgeous bloom. The foliage on this variety is sturdy and will withstand some afternoon sun. We grow this variety as a purple but it is easily changed to pink or blue and just as lovely. This variety reminds us of Brestenburg with its compact nature and free flowering ability and tightly packed petals. The Horben is usually one of the first varieties to bloom for us in the nursery and is stunning with deep, dark green leaves.
