Nursery contributed plant descriptions

PAGODA FLOWER CLERODENDRUM - A erect shrub, semi-woody,with large evergreen leaves in frost free areas. Hugh showy pyramidal clusters of orange-red to scarlet flowers held above the foliage. 3-5' tall at maturity with multiple stems. The lobed heart shaped leaves can be up to 12" across. Flowers summer thru fall and sporadically throughout year in frost free areas. Hardy zone 8-11 and perennial in zones 8b-9. A favorite of swallowtail butterflies. Drought tolerant once established. Partial sun to shade. A real showpiece.
The Pagoda Flower produces huge spikes of 1/2" coral-pink to reddish orange butterfly shaped flowers from mid summer well into fall. The spikes can reach 18" high and are shaped very similarly to a Chinese pagoda with flowers opening continuously over a period of weeks. The large velvety, generally heart-shaped foliage creates the perfect foil for the flower display and adds to its tropical appearance. The Pagoda Flower is very similar to the Java Glory Bower and the Japanese Glory Bower (Giant Salvia). All three have similar growth habits and will slowly spread by runners but never seem to be invasive or overly aggressive. In the northern portions of its range (zones 8B, 9) provide these Glory Bowers with a protected location preferably against a house or other building. Tolerant of full sun but often have the best appearance where they get midday and or afternoon shade.
