Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A new Chinese witch hazel with the "blackest" of burgundy leaves -- and they are shiny, too -- and, in winter to early spring, flowers of a saturated cerise leaning towards crimson. The form is very upright, to 4-5' tall and nearly as wide. Best in sun to dappled shade protected from wind and harsh weather with regular summer water for best performance. Easily frost hardy in USDA zone 8 and expected to accept temperatures to 0 °F, USDA zone 7. [PP18977]
Like a midnight sky, Carolina Midnight Loropetalum is definitely one of the darkest that we have come across. Dark burgundy rounded foliage contrasts with the near red frilly flowers in spring. New growth emerges a light reddish maroon. Chinese Witch Hazel is a nearly indestructible evergreen and can be pruned to form or allowed to grow into a large rounded shrub.Chinese Witch Hazel has become a popular landscape shrub anywhere that it is hardy and rightfully so with it's dark foliage and brilliant spring flowers. Drought tolerant once well established, deer resistant and virtually pest free. With proper pruning Chinese Witch Hazel can be maintained as a clipped hedge, trained into a small tree form or espalier, or use the larger growing varieties as a large screen or background shrub.
